FIFA targets the Italian football federation for Sulley Muntari, the Pescara player who was punished last week during the away match at Cagliari for having abandoned the field following the racist insults he received.
Although the FIGC suddenly cancelled the disqualification given to the player, this corrective measure may not have been enough. The risk is that FIFA could punish the head of the Italian football federation.
“We have a specialized committee to evaluate these situations and the commission will act” – said FIFA’s Secretary General, Fatma Samoura, interviewed by the BBC. “It is important that the committee could act as soon as possible. I have my views on anyone who is undergoing such treatment on and off the field. I am here to ensure that FIFA will put in place, through the commission, the appropriate measures for each individual discriminatory behavior.”
FIFA’s president, Gianni Infantino, expressed solidarity with the Pescara player, announcing his intention to speak with Muntari “Unfortunately idiots are everywhere, but we have to fight them.” Infantino has also anticipated that a summit with FIGC’s president, as well as commissioner of Serie A, Carlo Tavecchio will take place soon.
