Former Italy captain and 2006 World Cup Champion Fabio Cannavaro is raising funds for the Italian Red Cross with the help of Italian Football TV (IFTV).
It was over a week ago that Fabio Cannavaro posted the following on Instagram:
He along with his former World Cup Champion teammates have a goal to raise 1 million euros. So far €332,015 has been raised. To assist in reaching the goal, Cannavaro contacted Italian Football TV founders Marco Messina and Michael Kantaris to see how they can help. When the Capitano comes calling, how can you say no?
Messina and Kantaris put some thought into it and then had the idea of selling custom made t-shirts where 100% of the profits would be donated to the Italian Red Cross. Their clothing line Calcio by IFTV is a big hit in the calcio community and it naturally made sense to want to design a special t-shirt for this important cause. The message on the t-shirt is one of courage and hope “Gente come noi non molla mai” which translates to “People like us never give up.” Thanks to this initiative over $11,000 has been raised so far.
As part of the launch initiative, IFTV interviewed Cannavaro on what it is like living in China and how they dealt with the Coronavirus, and looked back at the 2006 World Cup Winning Team with some funny and interesting anecdotes shared by Cannavaro. He spoke about the leadership of Marcello Lippi, the unity on the Azzurri squad and his own performance that led him to win the Ballon D’or.
The pandemic has struck Italy very hard. The latest figures reported as of March 27, 2020 at 18:00 CET
Number of current cases: 66,414
Number of deaths: 9,134
